"Ali is amazing. There's no one like her professionally, and she really talks to you like we are friends." That's how Vera describes working with Ali, her physiotherapist at Six Physio, through the recovery that followed her knee replacement. Having had a previous operation on the same knee five years earlier, Vera already knew Six Physio well, and it was somewhere she wanted to return to.
A friendly, familiar face, at home
Vera's recovery began with home visits, something she describes as a stroke of real luck. "Having a home physio was really, really lucky, especially to have someone like Ali coming home. She was just amazing."
The difference showed early. Vera could not bend her knee past 90 degrees when Ali first arrived. By the end of that same session, she had reached 120 degrees. "She gave me lots of confidence that I can do it, and things will get better."
Why does physiotherapy matter after a knee replacement?
Physiotherapy matters after a knee replacement because regaining movement early, and safely, has a direct effect on how well and how quickly someone recovers. A knee that is not guided back through its full range of motion can stiffen, making everyday movement harder for longer. Just as importantly, a physiotherapist who sees a patient regularly is often the first to notice when something is not healing as it should.
That was true for Vera. When complications arose during her recovery, Ali's persistence, following up directly with the clinic on Vera's behalf, made a real difference to what happened next.
Where things stand now
Vera describes feeling much better now, able to do things she never thought she would be able to do again after leaving hospital. The home visits, followed by ongoing sessions at the clinic, have made what she calls a big difference.
