Jason asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice: Hi I injured my hamstring on the 12th March and recovered in a month, I did my own rehab with stretching and slow jogs. I was able to sprint without any pain in the 5th week. I decided to play soccer on the 18th April and re-injured my hamstring. I have since seen the physician twice and they performed dry needling. Its the 3rd week now and I can jog pain free, however the stretching exercises they gave ( placing foot on chair and pointing toes towards me) causes a sharp pain from the back of hamstring just below buttock ( bicep femoris). The strengthening exercises I feel no pain only on the stretching exercises. What do I do, not sure if I should continue to jog or stop until stretch is pain free....please help. Regards Jason

Hi Jason You may be over stretching. A torn hammy is a very over stretched hammy. You want to restore normal flexibility, but don't want to over do it. I think I'd stop stretching, concentrate on getting strength and stability and start working on more endurance. Failing that, make sure this is not a neural issue (sciatic nerve can mimic hamstring pain exactly) try slump testing....have a squizz on google and see if there's anything in it.
