Bunions from Running

September 17, 2018

Hi – are you able to help with bunions for runners?

I am a regular runner and have recently developed sore right foot and slight protrusion which appears to be a bunion.

Best regards

Hi Will

You may well have the start of a painful bunion.

If you look down at your toes without any socks on, there will probably be more “air” between your left big toe and second toe, whereas your right won’t have as much “air”.

This gives you a much more unstable pushing off action when running compared to your left side, as your knee will roll in – forcing your right big toe towards the second toe. You need to control this rolling in, to take the pressure off of your toe/bunion.

You could buy some toe spacers or wear different runners, but they won’t get rid of the cause of your symptoms – we can show you this and how to rehab it well. It takes a while (depending on resting pain) but is very dobale.

Oh, and don’t worry about the bump – lots of people have this (?hereditary) but without any pain…
