We also use real-time ultrasound to view the pelvic floor inside the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic floor physiotherapy and how can it benefit a male?

Men do have pelvic floor muscles, providing support for the pelvic organs, they help your continence and your sexual function. Thanks to physiotherapy we can learn how to strengthen and lengthen these muscles to improve your symptoms and quality of life.

Pelvic floor muscle physiotherapy can be a benefit for:

  • chronic pelvic pain
  • prostatitis or prostatectomy related symptoms
  • urinary incontinence
  • erectile dysfunction
  • If you suffer from urinary or faecal urgency and incontinence
  • If you have constipation
  • If you suffer from chronic pain
  • If you experience pain with sexual intercourse
  • If you suffer from erectile dysfunction

Yes. The physiotherapist will determine the reason for your incontinence during the initial assessment with the ultrasound and a internal examination and then will decide which exercises you will need to carry on and which manual techniques to use/stretches if there’s a tightness issue. Education will be given regarding diet, fluid intake and toilet habits.

The physiotherapist will ask you to perform a pelvic floor contraction and relaxation and then will test your muscles endurance asking for a long contraction (holding) as well.

Yes. The pelvic floor must be strong and elastic in men too.  After the initial assessment and the history taking, your physiotherapist will understand the cause of your sexual dysfunction and prescribe specific pelvic floor exercises and relaxation/breathing techniques. These together with the correct routine modification / education will improve your symptoms.

You can ask Google, ask your GP, or ask your urologist.
