Legs Hurting

September 25, 2024

Hello, could you answer why after every time I play football my leg bones hurt, for example above my ankles hurt all the time. Also could you let me know how to fix it.

I am 17 so I’m not sure the answer to this. A response would be appreciated!

Hi Woody

Anything that is above or below joints like your ankles generally gets me thinking about with one of two things.

Either the tendons or just the load going through developing bone, especially with your age even though you are getting to the end stage of becoming skeletally mature.

Bone grows from the ends out and without trauma I’d initially suspect that these end plates are becoming irritated and painful probably due to the amount of footy you play – and that can either be once in a blue moon or 7 times a week. Playing on different surfaces like hard grass, old Astro, hard courts will also cause similar issues.

If it’s the latter then maybe cut this down by 50% for a good few weeks and work on things like balance and strength. Make sure your boots are also fit for purpose and sometimes even wearing some shock absorbing insoles might help too.
