Hi, I've played netball from age 6-14 and then switched to rugby and have played ever since. I've always had weak/pained knees but this season I've been stepping a lot and have hurt my knees but not to the point of injury. Ever since then they hurt when kneeling, squatting , running etc. What could it be and how can I treat it? Thankyou

Hi Maria I think this is simply an issue with the way your kneecap moves over the front of your thigh, rather than anything else as you didn’t mention any swelling or locking or giving way or anything traumatic. Your knee is simply “the victim” of what happens at your hip/pelvis and what happens at your foot. You need to control the amount your thigh rolls in (which causes your kneecap to “track” poorly) and sometimes the same(ish) with your foot. Start simple - do some decent, weight bearing glute control (NOT strength) and endurance work - lunge, squats, steps up BUT form is key, so deck the halls with these exercises and the fairly on top of the tree... taping you knee!
