If you don’t use it, you lose it. by Daniel Piggott, Rehab Physio Fitzrovia. 12th September 2018.
There is no doubt that the human body thrives off movement. Let’s think back to the good old days, that time of hunting and gathering. Varying demanding physical tasks and being constantly active challenged our bodies. We were stronger and more resilient. Unfortunately, the reality of the world today has a lot of us stuck in the office, motionless and sedentary. Sitting is really the enemy of our body and spine. So for the office workers out there, what can we do?
Minimising sitting to 20 minutes at a time is a start. The literal act of changing position to stand is better than doing nothing. Varying and changing sitting posture if you are forced to sit for extended periods also helps. Yes, being fidgety is a good thing!
Inevitably though, if sitting is a big part of your day, stiffness in your thoracic (upper) back usually prevails. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain through unideal spine posture and movement. If this sounds like you – movement is the key! But if movement is currently painful or difficult, Six Physio Fitzrovia are here to help you get moving again – physiotherapy to address the stiff upper spine and exercise rehabilitation and Physio-led Pilates to get you moving and feeling better again!
