Leg and back pain

I injured discs in lower back when i was 18 and am now 43. Started playing football again recently for first time in 2 years. After or during every game i feel my calf or thigh cramp up badly, i think get pain all week in both legs and in lower back.

Could this be down to back injury or low fitness levels? Thighs feel like dead legs

Hi Michael – could well be both, but I probably doubt it.

What you had years ago often has very little relevance to what you feel or can do today.

It sounds as if you’re getting cramp in the game either because your not strong enough (get to the gym more), not fit enough (try to run a couple of 5k+ a week), not flexible enough (do a decent warm up not just a few static stretches on the sideline) or not hydrated enough (drink more water).

If you think you’ve got all those’d bases covered then do try this slump test to see if the pain is related to your back

 

I agree with you – it’s most likely due to your fitness level. Get fitter, get stronger and enjoy yourself.
