Moderate scoliosis?

February 26, 2020

I’ve had consistent stabbing/burning upper back/neck pain for about 6 years, particularly on the right side of my upper back – I have recently been diagnosed with moderate scoliosis but no explanation has been given to me for this upper back pain.

Do you have any possible idea of what the cause could be or how I could manage it?

Hi Diane

Your scoliosis is probably a red herring and sometimes unfairly used as an excuse for lots of back and neck issues.

A much more plausible and common explanation is that you’ve got a naturally stiff thoracic spine which means that you like your chin out when sitting, reading, working etc.

The chin poke stretches and compresses joint(s) in your neck which refer pain around your thoracic spine.

You need to get your thoracic spine moving better to allow your head to sit better on your neck (!) and allow the muscles that surround your back and neck improve how they work so they can control the joint compression.

There’s lots of good thoracic mobility stuff here

And lots of good stability work here too
