I had a spinal fusion operation 8 years ago. I didn’t have anyΒ follow up physio etc. In the last few months I have noticed an increasingΒ amount of pain in the middle area of my back normally around the spine area.
If I apply pressure to the area it relieves the pain a lot. What would be theΒ suggested next step?

Hi Stephanie
β¦..I think youβve kind of answered your own question! Most people know whatβs wrong with them, they just donβt know what to do.
You need to get greater motion in your thoracic spine as itβs forcing you to poke your chin out as a compensation. Itβs this chin poking that refers pain into the middle bit of your back.
As long as your fusion is right at the bottom (L5/S1) I think itβs totally fine to lie on a rolled towel for initially 2 minutes, then slowly build up for the next week or so. A bit of Pilates wonβt go amiss either – youβve got to take ultimate responsibility for spinal health and this is a great place to start
