Geraldene asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:
I broke my ankle in 2 places back in end of last year, it was severe they pinned it with 13 screws and 2 plates. I am still having lot of trouble and i am going back to consultant to see if i can have the metalwork out, what are the chances they could break my ankle again while removing the metal, they say its safe to remove at 10 months?
I still having pain especially doing the balancing excercises my ankle still feels really tight and stiff and its constant pain there all the time. Am i doing to much i try and do 10 of stretches, squats, and balancing on my bad ankle toe lifts, i try to aim for at least 3 times a day but some days i cant even do one of the last excercise. Im really upset i feel im not getting anywhere. The reason why i want the metalwork out is its uncomfortable and will that sort the problem out when i have it removed?

Morning Geraldene
Yes, I think is the answer.
It’s sounds as it you’ve had a really complex fracture – which has been successfully fixed through lots of metal work.
The more metalwork the greater the affect it will have over a joint. It seems as I’d you are doing everything you news to be doing. You frustration is justified and I think removing the metal work will give you more range adds less pain.
Removing metalwork may have possible complications of refracture, but your OS (knowing where the metalwork lies) will do everything possible to make sure this does not happen. It’s really rare to re fracture.
Good Luck, I’m sure it’ll be super successful.
