Jaw Pain

Rachel asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Dear Guru,

Do you have any advice or exercises for sufferers of jaw/temple tension, as a result of excessive jaw clenching – beyond the obvious “try not to clench your jaw”

Thanks

Hayley

Hi Rachel

Lots of things can be done, but if you don’t know why you’ve got an issue with your jaw – it will simply keep returning.

Unless you been biffed on the chin (or any sort of trauma) then most TMJ (the joint in the jaw) issues related to your neck. I’m not sure they happen in isolation without trauma.

Simple things like keeping your shoulders mobile and moving the middle bit of your back will decrease tension in your jaw. Try. It to allow your chin to poke out too much and if you grind your teeth at night it might be worker seeing an orthodentist.
