Pessary fitting
When a pessary can help
-
Pelvic organ prolapse
When a pelvic organ shifts from its usual position, a pessary provides the support it needs.
-
Urinary incontinence
A pessary reduces bladder pressure, helping prevent leaking during exercise or everyday movement.
-
Pelvic floor pressure
For that persistent feeling of heaviness or dragging, a pessary can provide real relief.
Understanding prolapse, and what can help.
Most women who come to us have been carrying it quietly for a long time before they seek help. It's not always easy to describe, and it can feel hard to know where to start. If you've been noticing a feeling of pressure, a sensation that something is there, difficulty emptying your bladder or bowel, or urinary leaking, it's worth coming in. There's a great deal that can be done, and you don't have to keep managing it on your own.

What to expect from your first appointment
Your first step to getting your pessary fitted is booking an initial women's health assessment, so your clinician can understand your history and your symptoms. This includes a pelvic health exam to check your pelvic floor strength and determine if a pessary suits you, and which type. Pessaries come in many shapes and sizes, if fitting is the right next step, we can do it in the same appointment.

FAQs
A pessary is a small silicone device that fits inside the vagina to support the pelvic organs when they have prolapsed. It works by providing the structural support that the weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments can no longer provide on their own. Pessaries come in many shapes and sizes, and your clinician will assess which type is most suitable for you during your appointment.
We recommend a check-in two weeks after your fitting, and follow-up appointments at three, six and twelve months. Most pessaries are worn for three to six months, though some are inserted and removed as needed depending on your lifestyle and symptoms. Your clinician will talk you through what's right for your situation at your appointment.
A prolapse happens when one of the pelvic organs, the bladder, bowel, or uterus, moves down into the vaginal wall, usually because the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments have weakened over time. Childbirth, menopause, chronic constipation, or sustained pressure from heavy lifting can all play a part. Common symptoms include a feeling of pressure or dragging, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, urinary leaking, and discomfort during intercourse.
A pessary is one of several treatment options for pelvic organ prolapse, alongside lifestyle modifications and pelvic floor exercises. We won't recommend a fitting unless your clinician believes it's genuinely the right option for you. If you're undiagnosed but think you may have a prolapse, the right first step is an initial women's health assessment, after which your clinician will advise on the best course of treatment.
Pessaries are well tolerated by most women. Side effects can include increased vaginal discharge and some bleeding. If you are menopausal, you may require vaginal oestrogen to aid lubrication, and your clinician will discuss this with you and advise if needed.
Pessary fitting is currently available at our Fitzrovia clinics. If you're not sure which is most convenient, get in touch and we'll help you find the right clinic and the right time.
The initial women's health assessment that forms part of your appointment can be claimed through most private medical insurers. The pessary fitting itself and the pessary are not covered by insurance and must be paid for privately. Your clinician will be transparent about costs from the outset.
